Every equation is a locked box, and you open it by doing the opposite of what was done to the variable — addition gets subtraction, multiplication gets division. The order matters because you undo the last operation first, which is why you peel off the 7 before touching the 3. That’s why the distractors work. Divide 22 by 3 first and you get 7.33, a number that isn’t even on the page — the test is checking whether you reached for the calculator instead of the inverse.
