You keep seeing me doing field inspections and asking, “Okay, but HOW do I actually get started?” You don’t need to know everything on Day 1. You need a starting point. 1. Set yourself up as an independent contractor and have your basic business information ready. 2. Make sure you have the basics—a reliable vehicle, smartphone with a good camera, email, internet access, and basic inspection tools as assignments require. 3. Learn the different types of field inspections—residential, commercial, occupancy, insurance, construction draw/progress, repair verification and more. 4. Research and apply to multiple field inspection companies. Don’t depend on ONE company for all your assignments. 5. Start small and learn the process. Read every work order carefully, take the required photos, document what you observe, and submit accurate reports on time. 6. Be RELIABLE. Respond to emails, meet deadlines, communicate when there’s a problem, and follow client instructions. 7. Once you gain experience, STACK contracts, expand into commercial work, negotiate appropriate fees and SCALE. You don’t need 20 contracts today. You need to START with the first one. And you don’t have to spend weeks trying to piece everything together.
