@ameyamarieokamoto: On Sunday, my boyfriend @Cal Calamia crossed the finish line of the Sydney Marathon with a 2:45:27 — securing his seventh world major star and winning the non-binary division. If you don’t already know, Cal is the activist behind the inclusion of a non-binary division in major races. And though trans and non-binary inclusion is growing in the running world and beyond, in no small part due to Cal’s work, it’s still treated with less care and recognition than the other divisions. Top men and women win $139,000 each, and top ten finishers in both the foot race and wheelchair race are also awarded cash prizes. But beyond bragging rights, there is still no celebration for the non-binary category. Despite that, it’s deeply important that this win — and every one that follows — is treated with the same respect, dignity, and care that reflects what it represents: not just for Cal, the runner, activist, and my boyfriend, but for every winner in a category that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Obviously, a luxury bag doesn’t compete with true equality, but I hope it’s enough to show him how special he is and how important this win is. And hopefully, watching Cal get his first luxury bag (which he said might be the most expensive thing he owns — besides me, duh) also means you’ll take the time to read this caption, and help bring more awareness to trans and non-binary inclusion in your own life. 🌈🏳️‍⚧️✨🫶
