@bookswithamanda212: *Wary!!!! I took a gummy, be gracious 😭😭😭* I’m back! Hopefully this video can help some of you start to recognize when others in your life are intentionally manipulating the meanings of your words, emotions, feelings, opinions, perspectives, etc… (therefore attempting to manipulate you) and hopefully it can allow you to feel more empowered to walk away from those conversations and people. Healthy dialogue and conversation requires mutual understanding and humility to admit misunderstanding or miscommunication. Hopefully it’ll be a helpful starting point to empower some of you to be willing to ask for clarity or admit fault, neither of things are bad or wrong, rather show maturity and intelligence. It’s hard when healthy models of communication didn’t exist in your life so hopefully this can help the right people :) #communication #communicationskills #relationships #friendships #healthyrelationships

This is so true! This is why you can only really discuss a complicated thing to the degree that you can create a moment of mutual good faith. You can ask about the definitions, but it won't matter unless everyone involved has an agreement based on a common goal. For some, the common goal is the truth. In algorithm driven online spaces and in the minds of people deeply influenced by those spaces, the goal is often some nebulous victory over an equally undefined foe. In those cases understanding is impossible.

My husband and I both tend to be bad at word choices, which is very noticeable during serious discussions. So we do a thing where we essentially inform the other of the intent before saying the thing. So it could start out with "this is going to sound worse than I mean it, but these are the words I can think of". And a lot of times it does come out sounding really bad. But it gets the other person thinking about what is really trying to be communicated, rather than just making assumptions based on poor word choice. And we'll offer up the alternative meaning that we may hear. And we'll do that until we both are on the same page. It's dumb, but it really helps us avoid unnecessary attacks and defensiveness.

Alright, you are one of my top five all time favorite content creators because of how thoughtful and articulate you are, but you've got me lost. You just made a whole video laying out why accurate definitions are important while constantly mispronouncing wary as weary, and even misspelled it in the caption. Was this deliberate gaslighting to see if your audience would catch it or just a random mistake? Or am I the one confused and wrong here?

wary [ware-ee] = be careful, weary [weer-ee] = tired. They're pronounced differently.

Pausing to ask someone what a certain word means to them can be triggering to them. If people understood that it’s ok to discuss semantics (vs arguing about them) then conversations can be productive. I try to make it a habit of clarifying words that I think the other person might misinterpret and I also try to be mindful of there definitions.

Also in relationship, like defining cheating, or respect, “being there for me” or whatever. When I was younger I assumed we’d mean the same things, when in reality, what one person sees as respect could be something completely different to another’s definition.

Someone in particular in my life whenever talking or arguing tells me that my perspective is wrong and off and brings up my past trauma and drug addiction telling me I have like brain damage and I must not understand. Sometimes I feel like he is manipulating me but other times I question my entire perspective or my reality. I try to ask for clarity often but then I still am told my emotions are not appropriate. Idk

Getting on the same page of the argument with someone is so hard when they don’t have a grasp of that idea. I find arguing very frustrating when it comes to family because for some reason they do not see the argument as something that progresses through effective communication and mutual understanding. When we argue it feels like the whole point of it is to speak with your ears and eyes closed and im so annoyed that this.
