Tucked away behind the beautiful oaks of the Garden District is a house with a history of vanity, tragedy, & architectural shape-shifting. ⚜️ The whole neighborhood actually started back in the 1830s because of a massive cultural rivalry. Wealthy American newcomers designed huge, grand estates surrounded by massive, lush botanical gardens, which is exactly how the area earned its name. They refused to live near the French Creoles in the French Quarter, so they bought up an old plantation to build their own "Billionaire's Row."💰 The mansion was originally built in 1852 for just $6,750 as a flat-roofed Italianate home. This was a genius piece of early engineering to beat the heat before electricity, using huge front porches to catch river breezes & massive floor-to-ceiling French doors to funnel natural sunlight deep into the dark center hallways. 🌞 By 1873, it belonged to General John Bell Hood & his wife Anna Marie, who filled the massive home with their 11 children —including three sets of twins! General Hood wanted to flex his status & accommodate his massive family, so he gave the house a dramatic Parisian makeover. In August 1879, a brutal Yellow Fever outbreak ripped through the household, killing the General, his wife, & their oldest daughter all within days of each other, leaving 10 of their kids orphaned. 💔 Today, this breathtaking mansion stands as a haunting reminder that behind New Orleans’ most beautiful facades lies a history deeply rooted in both immense fortune & profound tragedy. While the grand steps & stunning design continue to captivate people from all over the world, it’s the neighborhood’s deep history, blend of design styles, & the real people who lived through it all that makes 1206 3rd Street so unique & unforgettable. 😍✨⚜️ #neworleans #storytime #design #southerngothic #architecture
