@ancient.frontier: Rome began as one small city in Italy. More than 2,000 years later, its empire was still alive. 🦅🏛️ According to Roman tradition, Rome was founded in 753 BC. The early Roman Kingdom eventually became the Roman Republic, and centuries of warfare transformed Rome from a regional power into the dominant force of the Mediterranean. Roman legions defeated Carthage in the Punic Wars, conquered Greece, expanded into Gaul and eventually controlled territories across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. After the civil wars of Julius Caesar, his heir Augustus became the first Roman emperor in 27 BC, beginning the age of the Roman Empire. Under emperors such as Trajan, Roman territory reached its greatest extent. But political instability, civil wars, invasions and economic pressures gradually transformed the ancient superpower. In 476 AD, the Western Roman Empire fell. But Rome wasn't truly gone. The Eastern Roman Empire, today commonly called the Byzantine Empire, continued from Constantinople. Its inhabitants still called themselves Romans, preserving Roman imperial tradition for nearly another thousand years. Only in 1453, when the Ottoman Empire captured Constantinople, did this final Roman imperial state disappear. From Romulus and the Roman Republic to Caesar, Augustus, the Roman legions, Constantinople and the Byzantine Empire, the history of Rome stretched across more than two millennia. Rome began as a city. It became an empire. Then it became an idea that refused to die. 🦅🔥 #fy #ancientrome #romanempire #ancienthistory #historytok
