The scientifically more complex answer is that a kilogram of iron weighs more than a kilogram of feathers when measured in Earth's atmosphere. Although both have the same mass of 1 kg, their apparent weights differ due to the principle of buoyancy. This difference arises from the following physical factors: Density and Volume: Iron is much denser than feathers. A kilogram of feathers occupies a volume hundreds of times larger than a kilogram of iron. Atmospheric Buoyancy: Air behaves like a fluid. According to Archimedes' principle, any object immersed in a fluid experiences an upward vertical force (buoyancy) equal to the weight of the displaced fluid. Apparent Weight Loss: Because feathers occupy a much larger volume, they displace significantly more air. This generates a much stronger upward buoyant force on the feathers than on the iron. Measurement on a Scale: The weight recorded by the scale is the actual weight (gravitational pull) minus the buoyant force of the air. Since buoyancy "pushes" the feathers upward with greater force, the scale will show the feathers as being slightly lighter. For a kilogram of feathers and a kilogram of iron to weigh exactly the same on a standard scale, one would need to add more mass to the pile of feathers to compensate for the air's buoyancy. Absolute equality of weight would only exist if the measurement were taken in a vacuum.
