Alex had shallow views but was able to eventually recognize this, the reason he couldn’t meet Serena in time was because he justifiably prioritized saving his sister. However this doesn’t undermine Serena’s understandable rejection or the fact that Alex still did have a very selfish mindset starting out. It’s a very realistic characterization, Alex isn’t always great but not horrible either and I think that applies for most the cast too
