Tbh while I am not a full nightlords fan, I definitely can see the reason why they turned traitor, and the tragedy of their primarch and legion as a whole. Its part of the reason I kinda wrote a homebrew chapter i called "The Blue butcherbirds" they "thought" they were raven guard, but in reality a chimeric chapter with more nightlords geneseed in them. They HATE the nightlords despite also carrying out primarily terror tactics (if a bit more subdued on the imperium than the original nightlords...but doubling down whenever it came to chaos or xenos (they made a point to exploit the fear and suffering of xenos)).They had a selection process similar to the original nightlords, but only accepted those that actually repented for the awful deeds they done primarily to survive. They had a strong sense of justice compared to others similar to the original nightlords before their legions internal degradation, but were certainly more "reasonable" and "understanding" often making sure to interogate, call out, and punish those whom led to the circumstances that often created the people they cracked down so harshly on (didn't not make many friends from this). They also had a weird "gene flaw" that afflicted some of the legion that led to some of them when they entered any state of uncondioussness (sleep, knocked out, or even in survival stasis) a very low (but ultimately inevitable) chance to be afflicted with nightmares so great that they would perish in their sleep...were they to survive they awoke "enlightened" to truths they "could never share to any but among themselves quietly" and were expected to immediately become chaplains for their chapter regardless of their prior role/rank, or would ritualisticly have their vocal cords removed and join chapters unique "Enlightened silent" company. This led to the chapter having more chaplins than most, and said chaplins having a higher presence and role in the chapter...especially when it came to matters of justice/judgement. Their chapter master upon initiation to the role was also expected to undertake a certain ritual to go through this "nightmare" voluntarily...as said nightmares revelations was critical to the chapter
