On September 11, 2001, Firefighter David Martin Weiss of the FDNY's elite Rescue Company 1 was declared missing at the World Trade Center's North Tower. He was 41. Weiss came up the hard way before he ever wore a badge. He grew up in Freeport, New York, joined the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department in 1978 as a teenager, and worked as an ironworker with Local 580 in New York City before the FDNY appointed him in 1989. In October 1997, off duty, he watched a car go off the FDR Drive and plunge into the East River. He stopped, climbed down the iron trestles of the elevated highway, and jumped into the water to reach the driver, whose heart had given out mid-crash.
"He just jumped, knowing that he was the person's only hope," a fellow firefighter later said. The rescue earned him the Emily Trevor-Mary B. Warren Medal for Heroism, and shortly after, his ticket into Rescue 1, the department's elite Manhattan rescue company — a posting he'd wanted since he first put on a uniform. Colleagues described him as built like a fire hydrant — 5-foot-10, 225 pounds, shaved head, covered in tattoos, all muscle — with a sense of humor sharp enough to match. "If he saw a thread, he knew how to pull it to unravel the whole shirt," one firefighter said of him. "He was the king of that." He was also a member of the Ner Tamid Society, a fraternal organization for Jewish firefighters, and was one of three Jewish FDNY members killed that day. He was previously named Fire Fighter's Quarterly Man of the Year in 1993 and also received a New York City Transit Award.
