Roman Holiday (1953) is one of those rare movies that never really gets old. ❤️ Directed by William Wyler, it follows Princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn), a young royal who escapes her strict schedule to experience Rome on her own. She meets reporter Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), who initially sees her as a great story, but their day together slowly becomes something much more personal. Audrey Hepburn is incredible here. This was her first major Hollywood role, and she somehow feels completely natural from the very beginning. Wyler was so impressed by her screen test that he had the cameras keep rolling after he said “cut,” capturing a genuine, unguarded moment that helped convince him she was perfect for the part. Gregory Peck was already a major star, but he quickly realized Hepburn was something special. He reportedly told the studio she deserved equal billing, even though he was the bigger name. Years later, Peck spoke incredibly warmly about working with her and remembered the film as one of the happiest experiences of his career. A lot of the movie’s charm came from filming in Rome itself. The Vespa rides, the streets, the cafés, the landmarks — it all feels spontaneous and alive. Even the famous Mouth of Truth scene features a genuine reaction from Hepburn. Peck hid his hand in his sleeve to make it look like the statue had bitten it off, and her surprised reaction was real. And then there’s that ending.
