I was a trader for a bank and we spoke to those folks in the World Trade Center multiple times per day. All of it was happening and my coworker was out sick and I was making trades as fast as possible knowing people I knew were in those buildings. One on the 25th floor, one on the 84th floor, one on the 104th. The markets closed and we didn’t hear from any of them for days. I had to take a mental health day on the 13th. I literally had dinner with the 84th floor guy last night. We never talk about it. He lost 60 coworkers that day because he didn’t go back up when they said it was safe.

Senior year at a school about 20 minutes outside of manhattan… we lost a lot of parents that day in our school community and we could see the smoke.

That day was terrifying. The stillness because there were no planes in the sky and no one was driving because we were glued to our TV. A few days later going into stores people were quiet and overly polite to each other. The terror continued a few weeks later when we got hit with the anthrax attacks. My office had hundreds of pieces if mail from the targeted post office. Everyone was making emergency go kits, buying gas masks, and getting cipro antibiotic. We didn't know what was going to happen next.

We didn't hear from my dad who worked near by until 2 days later. He passed 3 years later of lung cancer discovered at stage 4, regularly went to check up and was healthy before 9/11. It kept taking lives years after the main event.

I cry when I think of that day. I’m in Indiana and can’t imagine what New York and the East felt. I remember it like yesterday and will never forget. 😥

i was in 4th grade on 9/11, living in a city in connecticut about 2 hrs from manhattan. i remember leaving for school that morning being transfixed by the sky because it was like sapphire blue and cloudless. just felt like it would be a great day, i was so excited for recess to go enjoy the weather for a bit. maybe like 45 mins into the school day they announced recess was canceled and we were so confused because they didn’t explain why and recess had NEVER been canceled before. one of my classmates and i had to go into the school (we were in a portable classroom bc of construction) to bring something to the office or another teacher. we crossed through the cafeteria and there were some teachers huddled around a tv watching the news and they hurried us through so we couldn’t see what was on the tv. we tried to sneak a peek on the way back but they either rushed us through again or had turned the tv off, i don’t remember. another classmate got pulled out by a staff member who was on the phone and she came back in crying so hard and i think by that point our teacher explained very gently that a plane had crashed into the twin towers and that student’s dad had been working there, was in the elevator going up when the building got hit, and managed to escape and that was him or her mom calling to tell her. i remember being anxious and wondering if a plane was going to crash into our playground and that’s why recess was canceled. they eventually canceled classes and had our parents pick us up. i watched the news coverage at my mom’s work for the rest of the day.

I just felt fear when my principal came into my 8th grade classroom and with no context rolled over the TV and said, “you kids are old enough to know that our country is under attack” lmfaoooooo. My mom was close by and picked me up (the school was a mile from a huge AFB) and as I was waiting in the office to leave with her and my brother, I saw the plane hit the second tower. In that moment it struck me that the adults were just scared as I was.

You just didn’t know when it was going to end. And there was misinformation. Couldn’t even go into the next phase - more shock and mourning - because you didn’t know when the next shoe would drop, or what it would be or where💔

I was a 1 year old at the time so I don’t remember it, but I took my first steps that day in the front yard, while my mom was talking with other parents on the block who’d just picked their kids up early from school. Basically every kid on the street was outside playing so they wouldn’t be near the tv or radio playing the news

I am the one who told my father. He was a former spook and sniper. He was delivering newspapers and didn't listen to the radio even. I called him and said "2 planes have hit the World Trade Center Towers". HE SAID "HUH!". I asked "What do you mean Huh?" He said "It's Al Qeada and prob6a guy nane Osama Bin Laden". I asked how he knew that and he said "You can't know that". I'll never get over the fact my dad seemed to know a lot about it no one was talking about yet. He also said "Were there only 2 planes?" He'd been retired for ten years on paper. I was shook.

I was 4, it’s one of my earliest and most clear memories. My mom was so afraid, and we couldn’t get in touch with my dad. She sat on our coffee table watching the news and crying, and I didn’t understand why, I just saw her crying and rubbed her back. I remember her screaming when the towers fell. I didn’t understand what I had witnessed until I was older obviously, but it’s so clear in my head. My dad was ok, but a lot of my classmates lost a parent/family member and my mom and dad lost a number of good friends - we were a town where many of the adults commuted into the city for work. Every year at school, a lot of my classmates stayed home on the 11th and we always had a ton of absences. Was always a deeply upsetting day annually in our community.

I lived through it. I was in Manhattan-midtown. You can’t understand the feeling of desperation, fear, and hopelessness thinking your building was next. Getting off the island was terrible. Knowing that people died and that you might be next is terrifying.

I was 5, turning 6 in kindergarten and I remember we were coloring and all of the sudden another teacher ran into our classroom and started whispering to my teacher then they both ran out of the classroom. Our teacher came back with the cart with the big box tv on it and we watched the news all day.

As parents at that time, we were told to shut off the tv because children think it is a new terrible thing happening every time they show it.
