Okay friends, let's talk about something I get asked about a lot. Nonverbal doesn't mean mute, that's the biggest misunderstanding people have. About 25-30% of autistic kids are nonspeaking or minimally verbal, meaning they may have a few words but can't hold a full conversation. My son is one of them. He has autism level 3, considered nonverbal, but he says a few things, juice, milk, no.
"No" is his strongest word, but we're still working on it not being a full sentence. He understands "no" as a hard boundary, but he'll also shout it at a video game when he's mad. He has echolalia. Echolalia means he repeats phrases he's heard, from TV, a video game, or anywhere else, and parrots them throughout the day out of context. Hearing him say a phrase doesn't mean he's telling me something; half the time, he's echoing something he heard hours ago. This video shows a normal day for us. He's on his iPad, gets frustrated with a game made for 8-9 year-olds, he's almost 4 and doing great with it. When he grabs onto me, it's his way of telling me he needs help. We're still working on him saying it, or using his AAC device instead. From there, I read his body language, guess what "no" means this time, offer alternatives, follow him when he runs off without explanation, and try everything until we get close to what he wants. People assume because he's in speech therapy, speech is the goal. It’s not, communication is the goal, in whatever form it takes. The goal was never talking, it's getting him to communicate in a way we can understand. That’s the conversation. I don't get to ask about his day. I don't know his favorite color. It just lives in his head, and I'm guessing every day. He’s been in early intervention since he was two, which isn't the norm. It’s hard to get a diagnosis that early. I was pushy, made my own referrals before his pediatrician did,all because I knew, mom gut, before anything official. This is what I mean when playdates are hard. People offer, and their kid is neurotypical, and say, "I talk to my kid about kids like yours." I appreciate that, but your kid can't meet mine where he's at right now, & that makes inclusion hard sometimes. #autismawareness #momlife #autism #motherhood #onthespectrum
