🚨Handling the “career blocking manager”👇 It’s a really horrible feeling when it feels like your manager is blocking your career development due to their own need for control. This isn’t an easy situation to navigate. The important thing is to avoid criticism as this is likely to lead the manager to close down the conversation. Instead try to keep the conversation exploratory by doing these 4 things: 1️⃣ Seek to understand what their concerns would be with you taking the lead. For example you can say: “I’m curious what your concerns would be with me taking the lead?” 2️⃣ Demonstrate prior thinking Finding out what their concerns are allows you to try and reassure them by demonstrating prior thinking. This makes it more difficult for them to resist. 3️⃣ Highlight that you see this as a development opportunity. For example: “I recognise gaining experience handling tricky people in these forums is an important development area for me which is why I thought this was the perfect opportunity” 4️⃣ Propose another option respectfully Ideally one that makes them feel like they still have some sense of control. For example: “How would you feel about me taking the lead initially and then if things do get tricky you can be on hand to support me?” 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation. There are different ways this situation could be approached so please use your own judgement and adapt it as you see fit. 💬 Have you ever been in this situation?
