Stop convincing yourself that asking for basic effort makes you needy. Obviously, nobody owes you immediate access to them every second of the day. People work, sleep, struggle mentally, forget to respond, put their phones down, and sometimes genuinely don’t have the energy for conversation. A late reply isn’t automatically rejection. But when somebody consistently leaves you waiting while you’re constantly initiating, constantly checking in, constantly finding excuses for them, and constantly wondering whether they even want to hear from you, eventually the pattern becomes information. You shouldn’t have to perform emotional gymnastics every week explaining why somebody who supposedly cares about you rarely acts like they do. And maybe that’s the part worth remembering without needing a viral celebrity story to prove it: when people deeply value a connection, there is usually some form of effort. Maybe they aren’t texting every five minutes. Maybe they communicate differently than you do. But you can feel that they’re trying. They come back. They initiate sometimes. They remember things. They make space for you. They don’t leave you permanently wondering whether your presence is an inconvenience. Love isn’t measured by a response-time stopwatch, and obsession isn’t the standard we should be chasing either. What you want is reciprocity. You shouldn’t need someone to call you 928 times to know you matter, but you also shouldn’t be staring at one unanswered message for three days trying to convince yourself that crumbs are a feast.
