for me, it's state of grace AND treacherous. they're her greatest songs in my opinion. not my favourites, not the ones that speak to me the most, but they're the ones who encapsulate who taylor is as a person, a writer, and a musician.

This is crazy. I said State of Grace before you did. It feels like a forgotten-ish song in her discography, it’s liked, but I don’t think the general public is as aware of it. It truly is such a good thesis statement of who Taylor Swift is, it also helps that it’s a banger and the instrumentation in the OG song is top tier 😌

i never liked the singles from red, so when i really started getting into her during the eras tour, red specifically BLEW my mind. i think it’s the best example of her not choosing the right singles to showcase her albums. red is a MASTERPIECE. state of grace? treacherous? all too well? HELLO? she’s lost me as a fan in the past year, but i still give major props where props are due.

Hear me out, state of grace isn’t about romantic love, it’s actually about her hyper existence in the present. The imagery in the song captures incredibly specific moments, it’s her realizing the purpose of life is connection to others and moments that ground her to purest existence. Hence the name of the song, she’s in a state of thankfulness, trust, respectful and effortless flow for the universe her soul exists in. And to me personally very few songs are able to capture this essence it’s soooo underrated.

the very same reason why i consider red as THEE taylor swift album. long before she had 1989 and folklore, red already contained the past, present, and future of her music. once you experience that album, you'll see everything she had been, everything she was becoming and everything she would eventually grow into. you'll get her country roots of her past, mixed with her pop sensibilities (present) and then the subtle beginnings of her folk and indie songwriting. making it THEE quintessential taylor swift record, because red refuses to be just one thing. LIKE TAYLOR. while campaigning for 1989, she was describing Red as a "patchwork quilt" usually as a way to uplift 1989's "sonic cohesiveness." she doesn't realize it at that time but somehow all those pieces make up one unmistakably Taylor Swift album. all her pens were demonstrated perfectly on the tracklist too. you get a balance of quill, fountain, and glitter gel pen all throughout the album. like you just get her entirety, all her contradictions: country, pop, rock, folk. devasting and ridiculous, poetic and unserious, intimate and massive, nostalgic and forward looking. it's where all her versions/identities/eras starts to exist all at once. happy, free, confused, lonely, in the best way.
