The footage comes from the tense political atmosphere of January 1999, when Nigeria was preparing to return to civilian government after years of military rule. The Lagos State governorship election was held on 9 January 1999, and Tinubu, alongside his running mate Kofoworola Bucknor, defeated the PDP candidate Dapo Sarumi. The country was emerging from the military era of General Abdulsalami Abubakar, following the death of General Sani Abacha in 1998 and the shocking events surrounding the struggle for democracy. The transition eventually culminated in the return of elected civilian government on 29 May 1999. Tinubu would go on to serve as Governor of Lagos State from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007, winning a second term in 2003.
