POV: You want to raise a child who enjoys a variety of foods — not a child who only eats chicken nuggets. 😅 I get this question so much in my practice, “Doc how do I get my baby/child to eat?” Starting around 6 months, introducing solids is about so much more than getting your baby to eat. It’s about helping them learn how to taste, chew, explore, and enjoy different foods. Here are a few habits I encourage parents to start early: 🥑 1. Offer a variety of foods. Don’t stick to the same few “safe” foods. Rotate fruits, vegetables, proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. Focus on Iron rich foods from plant and animal sources to prevent Iron deficiency anemia. (Think meat, beans, lentils, eggs, fortified cereal). Offer your baby fruits with Vitamin C to help with Iron Absorption 🍊🍓🫐 🥕 2. Don’t give up after one try. Babies may need to see and taste a food many times before they accept it. A rejected food isn’t necessarily a disliked food! 👶🏽 3. Let your baby feed themselves when developmentally ready. Finger foods and responsive feeding allow babies to explore textures, flavors, and hunger/fullness cues. 🍽️ 4. Avoid pressuring your baby to eat. You decide what, when, and where food is offered. Your baby decides whether and how much to eat. 👀 5. Let them see YOU eat a variety of foods. Babies learn by watching us! Family meals are an opportunity to model healthy eating. 🌱 6. Keep offering nutritious foods—even if they’re rejected. Picky eating often becomes more challenging when we immediately replace every rejected food with their favorite. 🐮7. Breast milk or formula remains important during the first year. Avoid honey before 12 months. Consuming Cow’s milk should be avoided until one, but it can be introduced in other ways like plain, sugar free yogurt. And remember: messy eating is learning and you do NOT need teeth to chew!😂 #pickyeater #healthymeals #momtok
