i think with ethel cain specifically it seems to be very intentional that you can't really understand the lyrics on first listen because forcing the listener to put in effort to find the meaning of the song probably encourages them to be curious about the rest of the story which is really at the core of all her music. She's never really made commercial pop music and I think if that was her goal she probably wouldn't hide the lyrics so much

American teenager is her most pop-like song. It doesn't really represent what most of her music actually is like. I'd definitely recommend showing him any of the other songs on Preacher's Daughter or Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You. My favourite songs of her are A House In Nebraska, Nettles and Inbread. You should also introduce him to the Ethel Cain lore as well, since it's pretty damn hard to piece it together yourself

totally get what you mean and don’t disagree about her lyrics being echoed over! that said, ethel took a lot of influence from gregorian chanting and i think she’s trying to use that sort of echo and reverb to make the song sound more vast. it would be interesting to hear how someone who’s got more expertise producing would tackle getting that vastness!

While i do understand what you're saying with the echo and reverbs,a big part of the song is the fact that its dressed up as a pop song but when you actually read the lyrics you realize what its about.I think she was trying to mirror how America glamorizes war as thaty what shes talking about in the song,so she glamorized the song itself

ethel has said before she makes mumble tracks, so the sound and pronunciation is picked before the lyrics which may contribute to why her lyrics are not as clear. i think she leans on ambiance in her music more than the regular pop artist!

I would’ve loved if you explored the lore and went a bit of a different route in the Preacher’s Daughter album 🙁 I’d love to hear him listen to Sun Bleached Flies or Strangers and understand the story behind it. Happy he liked it, though!
