Three Afghan nationals were caught laughing and joking at they attempted to flee the UK after raping a teenage girl. The men filmed each other while being smuggled in the back of a lorry to France three days after they piled a 17-year-old with alcohol and took turns raping her at a house in Bristol in November last year. The footage shot by Mehrab Safi, 21, of his friends, Awal Ahmadzai and Salman Habibkheil, both 19, was played in court this week when the men were convicted of grooming and raping the teen. A fourth assailant, a 17-year-old Afghan national who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also convicted on the same charges. The court was told the video was a “direct insight into the mood of three”, and that the men appear to be “celebrating because they think they got away with it”. The trio were spotted by French authorities soon after arriving in Calais and returned to the UK where they were arrested on suspicion of rape. The attack happened a day after the victim met Safi while Christmas shopping with a friend in Bristol city centre, and after he groomed her over Snapchat. During the early hours of 30 November, he arranged for a taxi to drop the teenager at a house in Bristol. She was the given vodka and raped by Safi and Habibkheil. After falling asleep, she was raped and sexually assaulted by Ahmadzai and the 17-year-old. Later that morning, Safi raped her a second time. The men have all been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing on October 6. The teenager has been released on conditional bail. #5news
