You are correct, Dr. Fasua! Ask them to provide the number of children and then remove that number from Nigeria’s population when calculating the working-age population. They should also account for the number of university, polytechnic, and NCE students. These numbers run into tens of millions, and most of these students should not be counted as part of the active working population. Then we have retirees—that is another significant number. What about the people living in our villages, which make up a substantial portion of Nigeria’s population? Who has actually gone there to properly count them and factor their economic contributions into the labour market? The problem is that many of these anchors may not fully understand the issue you are explaining. Instead, they pick out parts of the story that will attract a larger audience, particularly among people who may not have the full information or context.
