People ask why we don’t learn about this tragedy often (barring that fact millions of civilians died and this is a drop in the bucket) most of the tragedy is the fault of the captain of the ship. He refused to listen to a U-boat captain when he was told to keep close to shore with no lights on, he instead chose to Goto open waters with some navigational lights on. After being told a German mine sweeper was in the area, he further turned on all navigational lights including the green and red ones making the ship a giant Christmas tree like target to shoot at. They further failed to paint any hospital markings (not that it would have mattered much at night) on their ship giving them some protection as a hospital ship, though realistically the soviets would have cared very little about that protection. Lastly most of the civilians on board defied orders to wear life jackets because of how hot most compartments became because of overcrowding. It’s a tragedy of the Germans own making with numerous failures on the part of the captain.

while the sinking wasnt a war crime, 9000+ people dying in the sinking of a single ship, many being women and children evacuating to escape the wrath of the red army (who was documented to have done things to women and children i cant say on this app, but more than one instance involved nailing infants to walls) is still a tragedy. yes, soldiers were aboard. yes, the German army did horrible things, and not just the ss. still, the civilians who lost their lives trying to escape a war that had destroyed their lives and an army that would have ended their lives in the worst ways possible is tragic. it wasnt a war crime. but it was horrible. the inaccuracy of this video is all the lights being on. in reality, it was the marker and navigation lights that were on to avoid a suspected collision. the soviet submarine that spotted them got a lucky break. too many men of rank in the German navy were at the helm and the dumbest idea prevailed. for the sake of the innocent on board, they should have stayed blacked out. much better the dirty communist captain of the sub face Stalin's wrath for being awol from being a drunk than hudreds of children and babies die in those icy waters. the last survivor recovered was an infant wrapped in blankets and sheltered by the frozen bodies of adults who gave their lives to keep him safe. even in the citizens of a country that started a war so bloody that only communism and abortion have claimed more lives and over a longer span of time, there was enough heroic selflessness in some that they could make a sacrifice so noble. I dont know where that baby ended up or who he lived to be. but I hope the sacrifices that led to his survival paid off.

If you’ve ever been on a cruise ship, and you went to a balcony and just looked off into the distance at night. It’s just pure black, even if the moon is up the way the ocean just absorbs the minimal amount of light that might be produced by the moon, it’s terrifying, and typically at night it gets cloudy too, so you can’t even see stars or moonlight, as if you just shut your eyelids amount of darkness
