Mist coat is new to me, I'd have sized with 1:4 pva or a diluted wallpaper paste.

Did you consider an HVLP sprayer since the mess won’t matter? I found it a bit sensitive to paint mix but amazing when it got going.

@Mrsnoname: When I lived in my old flat I painted my daughter ceiling and every layer of paint fell off. Turns out it wasn’t mist coated. I had to sand what didn’t fall off and start again. The neck ache was genuinely AWFUL!! Not to mention the dust 😭😂
