For everyone confused about Chad’s mention of dog meat: the dish he ordered is called Chả Cầy. Traditionally, it was associated with dishes prepared using dog meat, but today it can also be made with pork. The name stuck even though the meat changed. If you just want to be racist or demeaning toward Vietnamese people, call us all “dog eaters,” or assume we’re scammers, then sure, believe what you want and don’t visit Vietnam. But if you’re genuinely interested in learning about Vietnamese culture, here’s some context: properly prepared dog meat is not cheap, nor is it something that is simply thrown into random dishes. Preparing it is quite specific, and many Vietnamese people do not eat it and actively refuse to eat it.
