on this topic, i don’t think any male character should be gender bent. the whole point is that elle was perceived as less because she was a woman. emmet would not have been favored if he were a girl. gender stereotypes are a large, impactful part of this story.

The blonde part also matters a lot. Elle has to be blonde. Vivian has to be a brunette. The stereotype that brunettes are studious and blondes are dumb is at play, too. Warner chose a serious Ivy Leaguer from an old money family over his good time girl and that’s the catalyst for so much of the movie. The “date a blonde, marry a brunette” adage is a major plot point. Those 3 characters have to be white for the story to work. The rest of the characters could be more flexible.

I think there are times where race can really impact a character's impact. I think it's most common when a character is not white but it CAN apply to white characters. I think another white character this applies to is Kissin Kate Barlow from Holes.

This is a super interesting conversation to be having! As you were describing Elle, I was trying to think what black characters would fit that description. I came up with Hillary Banks and Dionne from Clueless - both 90s characters, but their privilege is justified by the characters around them in a way Elle doesn’t need. Dionne is the black best friend trope, she does not have a character arch, and she exists in an almost fully white world. Hillary does grow and change throughout the series, but her privilege (like the whole family) is directly countered by Will’s character. He is Alice in Wonderland - while the Banks children have privileges, the show does not pretend that the real world and its systematic racism doesn’t exist. You should seriously write a substack essay on this topic, there are so many ways to dissect it!

I would argue very similarly for Cher from Clueless because her story is also very much "rich white girl who never had to do anything for anyone other than herself". and like Elle she never had to overcome any struggles, so when she was face with some she felt totally, utterly "Clueless"!

I think we have this whole idea that white women are feminine, delicate, pure and “innocent” (as in naive and stupid) while black women are stereotyped as masculine, promiscuous, and impure. Her defeating this stereotype of the “dumb naive blonde” was SO necessary in the early 2000s
