@mariahlemaee: I went to the Fairfield City School district growing up and without the arts department as an option for me in middle school I don’t know where I’d be today. I don’t know everything about this situation so feel free to add! #fairfieldohio #fairfieldcityschools #butlercounty #artsprogram #band
Fairfield alumni and mom of current students. Devastating to think that they will cut music and art from the elementary schools as well. The buildings already have to be closed at 6 PM so that means no sports practice, extracurricular activities, dances, PTA meetings, scouts or fundraising events. No field trips. Tons of jobs lost and losing help throughout the schools where it’s definitely needed. Cost of living is really hard on everyone, but I’m willing to pay a little more to help the community. Why isn’t everyone else? Our students deserve knowledge and safe/clean schools.

Social Worker here and Fairfield parent. Everyone... the issue is not with Fairfield being able to budget. We are facing 2 issues. 1. The devaluing of education. 2. The underfunding of our schools.
In 1997, DeRolph v. State, Ohio was ruled to be unconstitutional funding public schools.
Also, there has been a shift to support school choice vouchers. Funding for school choice includes private schools and takes money away from public schools. Additionally, there are no income limits for school choice, which means if a family, a wealthy family, has enough money to pay for private education for their child-they don't have to pay it, they can get the voucher just the same as a family that makes median level income.

It’s because OH has given over $1 billion of tax dollars to subsidize private schools, while underfunding public schools.

I was in Show Choir at fairfield all throughout high school and choir since middle school and without these programs I wouldn’t be who I am today. It brought me lifelong friends, helped me get into college, let me realize singing is a strong passion of mine, and brought me community and confidence. This program meant everything to me. The district being willing to cut such a long running, distinguished, and successful program is disgusting. Even other schools with arts programs who had to make cuts didn’t completely cut things they just downsized, the fact that they’re not willing to downsize and instead remove a massive part of child/young adulthood development isn’t okay. This is only one part of the levy and so many others lives will be effected. It makes me sad that this is even an option for a school as big as Fairfield.

They need to start at the top. They need to cut all these extra administrators.

I’ve lived in Fairfield my entire life, all 47 years. I too benefited from the arts program. I was a bad nerd from fifth grade until when I graduated. No way in hell I am voting for an additional 1.5% income tax.

I’m confused. So property evaluations have skyrocketed over the past 5 years. Those evaluations have far exceeded inflation. Where is the millions and millions of dollars going? Time for a salary check on all administrators and a check of credit card charges. Someone did a check in Ohio school in 1 month they spent 120k on travel with reimbursement for dinners and ice cream. They got a break the next month was only 80k for travel. There is zero accountability for the budget…

I teach in another district and personally, you get what you pay for. The fact that people can’t understand that things are getting more expensive for EVERYONE, schools included then more money is going to be needed. I’ve seen first hand how expensive curriculum alone can be. And my little program only has about 43 kids in the high school.

the only thing I look forward to for school is marching band and show choir. there would be no reason for me to go to school, as I would then just feel it as a waste of time. many music teachers I have had (including one who resigned as the situation was most likely going to end with him getting cut anyway) have made my life better in so many more ways than I can say. if you can (especially if you’re retired because you don’t even have to pay an income tax) please vote yes this november

I don’t live in Fairfield, nor do I have kids, but last year I voted yes for our local school levy. Obviously paying more taxes isn’t ideal, but supporting opportunities for kids was important to me. Also, living in a stronger school district elevates your property value.

Born and raised in Fairfield and lived there until I was 22. This will be devastating to the district and it’s already been going severely downhill.

This levy has to pass. I’m so worried. My 1st grader already hates school. We’re working on him everyday. This would devastate him. Fairfield is a great district. I hope selfish residents don’t ruin the education experience for our students. We need more former students like you to advocate for YES FOR FAIRFIELD.

working in the district, hearing all the cuts currently happening or will happen is so sad. what people don’t understand is that yes your income taxes are going up but that money is going to the KIDS the FUTURE of our world. the majority of the people who are against the levy are people who are retired and don’t pay income taxes, when they should be the ones who are voting more because it’s not affecting them as much yk? if they can’t get a good education involving, the arts, sports, preschool, field trip then they will not be successful people in society. being a teacher right now is scary, i might not have a job in preschool because if the levy doesn’t pass in november the preschool will be changing.

This is a tough place for any public school to be in, but sadly, THIS is the result of the budget cuts and funding cuts coming from the top. When our government doesn’t value public schools, they do not care about the arts, the teachers, the STUDENTS. This will only get better if more people like you speak up, and more people VOTE against these changes and vote FOR schools.
