except hospitals do advertise so you ask to go there. when i was bleeding out from diverticulitis I chose where to go. getting rid of insurance is prob the best bet, because then hospitals and providers would need to be more competative and would have to compete on price or service. and just like most people dont know anything about eye care, the same for automobile care, so we shop around for both.

You can't shop around and price compare when you're in a health situation. OP is correct that us consumers don't know enough to understand all the gorey details, but I'd go one step further...the U.S. healthcare system is so complicated that medical providers themselves may not know all the information either, at least with respects to how a patient will get billed or what will be covered. Long story short, we need guardrails.

healthcare in the US is not capitalism drugs cost 1/10 in India it's illegal to import them, I can't get insurance across state lines, health insurance is allowed to lock me into a network if it worked like real insurance like cars you could go where you wanted. I go out of network the insurance company can refuse to pay not pay a little pay nothing as if I went to their doctor would have been free.

It's hard to separate capitalism from the stock market. HC companies listed on the stock exchanges must make a profit and therefore must play the hide and seek game with costs. their primary focus is profit and customers are secondary. imo.

I would suggest to you that you look into some of the current market socialist countries. I believe they are much closer to what you describe. and here, it is not even capitalism. it is venture capitalism, taking as much money from your customers and the system as you can. use every mechanism to create uncontrolled monopolies. I would love it if we could get back to health care being run by "small businesses" such as yourself.
