That’s not idempotency means, people tends to confuse it with Pure Function, idempotency does update the state of a resource, but for the same request it changes it once, any further request will not change it,

It's not so much that people ignored PATCH. It's more that PATCH wasn't formalized until 2010, long after most HTTP patterns for CRUD operations had been popularized.

I just use post and get, with /update and /delete suffixes on the path. Not textbook but it does work.

Nope. PUT is the Correct VERB (Not "method" as you mention) to use for updating. BTW, PATCH is still in use. PUT is NOT similar to CREATE.

Feels best to just think of it as a database. Get=SELECT, Post=INSERT, Put=MERGE/UPSERT, Delete=DELETE. done
