@livingwellwithdrmichelle: If you have had your wisdom teeth out, this is worth understanding. Even decades later. Around every tooth there is a ligament holding it in the socket. When the tooth is removed, that ligament does not automatically come out with it. While it stays behind, the body does not register the tooth is gone, and the gum grows down before bone can fill in. The only way to see it properly is a cone beam CT scan.
