@conscious.app: Burberry burned £28.6 million of unsold items in one year. Here are five ethical brands that give away clothes instead. Underwear for Humanity donates a pair for every item sold, more than 58,000 to date, to Australian women's shelters and homeless services. The donated pairs are sewn from deadstock, the leftover elastic and cancelled orders a factory would otherwise discard. WAWWA is a Manchester clothing brand run by two brothers. Its 1+1 range means every item you buy sends an identical new one to a homeless charity. Most of its clothes are now made in its own Manchester factory. Love Your Melon, now called LYM, gives a beanie to a child with cancer for every beanie sold, over 270,000. A company that buys up small brands owned it from 2022 until a co-founder bought it back in 2025. Y.O.U Underwear is a three-person British company that donates underwear to charity for every pair sold. It holds the highest score in Britain on B Corp, an independent audit of how a company treats people and the planet. Rapanui is an Isle of Wight brand run by two brothers who print each shirt only after it is ordered, so there is no unsold stock to destroy. Worn-out clothes are posted back free and remade. Burberry disclosed the £28.6 million itself, buried in its 2017/18 annual report. Clothes, bags and beauty products were destroyed. Burberry said this prevented counterfeiting and kept unsold goods away from discount resellers, which it argued would cheapen the brand. Burberry was not an outlier, only the one that got caught. Destroying unsold stock is routine across fashion and luxury, and Europe scraps 264,000 to 594,000 tonnes of textiles a year before anyone wears them. The brands that do the opposite are rare, and finding them takes work. Support ethical brands. Find them using the Conscious Spend app.

@Burberry of its own accord and by its own free will throw out its overpriced fast fashion rather than clothe people.
