I love filmmaking so much. The Hades scene, in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. Truly haunting and continues to echo in my mind. Elliot Page’s performance and monologue is a true highlight of the film and a reminder of Sinon being the heart of the story. The mirror system used is absolutely brilliant. The narrative and emotional impact is deeply felt by both the actors and the audience. If you saw my conversation with Matt Damon, we discussed the idea of how this worked. Basically, because the IMAX cameras and blimp system (used to quiet the IMAX cameras - the older cameras sound like generators while the new Keighley cameras are quieter yet still too loud to record audible dialogue - the blimp masks a lot of that sound so Nolan doesn’t have to use ADR) are so large, actors are unable to stand in the normal eye line position when performing, off-screen, for the actor who’s in a close-up on the screen. When Elliot Page is delivering Sinon’s powerful monologue and we are only seeing him on the screen, Matt Damon is off screen to give the performance that Elliot needs to feel the raw emotion of the moment. As Elliot explains, normally, Matt Damon would have just stood right next to the camera to make sure the eye line matches. For the production of The Odyssey, since the cameras are so large, Damon had to stand outside of the eye line. Therefore, through the mirror system, Elliot and Matt can do the scene while looking at each other, through the mirror reflection, to bring the real emotional depth of the sequence to life. In this clip, you’ll see some behind-the-scenes footage, which is provided in a Universal Pictures featurette for press purposes, showing the size of the IMAX cameras and an example of the mirror system from a sequence with Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal. Truly amazing. Thanks again to Elliot Page for joining the show and geeking out about filmmaking. For the full hour long conversation, search “On Film….With Kevin McCarthy” wherever you get your podcasts.
