It’s incredible to realize how little we actually know about what lies beneath our feet. Only relatively recently have we begun to understand the internal structure of our planet in greater detail: the crust, the enormous mantle, the liquid outer core, and the solid inner core. The deeper we look, the more we have to rely on seismic waves, physics, and experiments rather than direct observation. The Earth’s core is especially fascinating. The motion of liquid iron in the outer core drives the geodynamo, generating our planet’s global magnetic field. This field creates the magnetosphere, helping protect Earth and its atmosphere from charged particles carried by the solar wind. Mars makes this even more interesting. It once had a global magnetic field too, but largely lost it billions of years ago. Earth, meanwhile, still has an active interior, with processes happening thousands of kilometers beneath us influencing the conditions that make our planet habitable. We live on an incredibly thin outer layer of a planet whose center lies about 6,371 kilometers beneath our feet. And everything we know about that distant world has been discovered without ever reaching it. #Earth #Geology #edit #EarthCore #Geophysics
