Anyone guilty of this? Sometimes the best thing we can do at mealtimes is… take a step back 😅 Because starting solids isn’t just about how much food actually makes it into their tummy. It’s about learning HOW to eat. And learning to eat means exploring food with their hands, grabbing the spoon, bringing food to their own mouth, feeling different textures, making a mess (a lot of mess 🫠), watching you eat and slowly figuring it all out themselves. Whether you’re offering purées, finger foods or a combination of both, we want our babies to be active participants in the experience, not just passive recipients of food. That might look like: • letting them hold or grab the spoon • giving them opportunities to self-feed • following their cues when they’ve had enough • resisting the urge to wipe their face/hands after every mouthful • eating alongside them so they can watch and learn • accepting that yes… your floor may suffer 😂 Eating is a HUGE sensory and developmental experience. They’re learning skills that will eventually allow them to eat independently - and just like any other skill, they need the opportunity to practise. So yes, help them when they need it. But also give them the space to have a go 💛 The mess can be cleaned up. The learning is worth it. Also I think our OT Rach and Speechie Em deserve an Emmy after this performance 😉😉 #boobtofood #babyfood #startingsolids #blw #milktomeals
