@lucasvisual: Since 2008, Japanese photographer Eiji Ohashi has been photographing one of the simplest scenes imaginable: a vending machine glowing beside a quiet, snow-covered road at night. His series, “Roadside Lights,” turns these ordinary machines into something almost dreamlike. Surrounded by darkness and snow, the bright vending machines look like tiny beacons in the middle of nowhere. And that’s what makes the photographs so fascinating. Japan has millions of vending machines, and they can be found almost everywhere from busy city streets to remote rural roads. But Ohashi sees something deeper in them. He describes the vending machine as a symbol of the modern person, representing both loneliness and hope. A machine standing alone in the darkness can feel strangely human: isolated, yet still glowing. There’s no dramatic event happening in these photographs.
