1. Marcus Garvey (1887–1940) A Jamaican-born Pan-Africanist and Black nationalist. Known as KK, he played a major role in Zambia’s independence and supported liberation movements fighting colonial rule in southern Africa. 4. Amílcar Cabral (1924–1973) A revolutionary intellectual and independence leader from Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. He co-founded the PAIGC and led the struggle against Portuguese colonial rule. He was also an important Pan-African thinker. 5. Samora Machel (1933–1986) The first President of independent Mozambique. He led FRELIMO’s armed struggle against Portuguese colonialism and became president when Mozambique gained independence in 1975. 6. Agostinho Neto (1922–1979) The first President of Angola and leader of the MPLA. He led the struggle against Portuguese colonial rule and became Angola’s first president after independence in 1975. 7. Nnamdi Azikiwe (1904–1996) Known as “Zik of Africa,” he was one of Nigeria’s foremost nationalist leaders. He became Nigeria’s first indigenous Governor-General and later its first President under the 1963 republican constitution. 8. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa (1912–1966) Nigeria’s first and only Prime Minister. He played a central role in Nigeria’s transition to independence in 1960 and was known for his moderate and diplomatic political style. 9. Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918–1970) The second President of Egypt and one of the most influential Arab and African leaders of the 20th century.
