@starterstory: I flew to NYC to spend 24 hours with the four friends behind Cal AI - the app they sold for millions and is now on track for $50M this year. Blake (25), Zach (19), Henry (18), and Jake (31) built one of the most successful mobile apps of all time. Here’s how it actually went down: Month 1: $30K Month 2: $100K+ Month 8: $1M/month This year: on track for $50M Zach and Henry met at a coding camp when they were 10. Zach cold DM’d Blake. Then Zach pulled in Jake from StudyBuddy for the COO role. Dream team assembled. The biggest fork in the road: end of 2024, they got low eight-figure acquisition offers. Life-changing money. They said no. Kept building. Sold later for way more. Zach on why they didn’t fight: “All of us had our own domain of expertise and we all had complete trust in each other.” The wildest part of the whole trip? Blake broke down the actual size of the opportunity: Cal AI does $50M/year. The entire iOS App Store is a $100 BILLION pie. That means Cal AI is 1/2000th of the total opportunity. And the App Store is growing 10%+ year over year {projected to hit $200B in 6 years.} His take on copycats: they can get you to $10K or even $100K/month. But if you want a real outcome, build something new. Zach’s final advice: solve your own problem. “You know exactly what you would want out of the product… you know exactly who you’re marketing to because it’s marketing to yourself.”
