Is this how you flirt? In Țara Oașului, apparently subtlety was never invited to the party. Here, women arrive dressed like small, magnificently embroidered acts of insurrection, skirts blazing with flowers, beads stacked at the throat, voices sharpened and ready. Then come the țâpurituri: those piercing, witty sung cries that can tease, boast, provoke and, with sufficient conviction, make courtship sound less like romance and more like a beautifully organized ambush. Romania has quieter ways of finding a husband. Oaș chose theatre. The țâpuritură holds a peculiar place in Oaș musical culture, accompanying dances, celebrations and especially weddings, where words ride over the ceteră, the local fiddle tradition, alongside clapping and the jolting rhythms of dances such as Roata and Miresele. Traditional women’s dress is equally unsubtle: vividly ornamented blouses, floral skirts and aprons, elaborate braiding and, for brides, distinctive bead crowns. It is costume as declaration, music as public correspondence. Before dating apps reduced desire to a thumb movement, these villages had embroidery, lungs, witnesses and absolutely nowhere to hide. Perhaps that is what makes the whole spectacle so intoxicating. Attraction here seems permitted to be noisy, ridiculous, communal and gloriously undignified, rather than sterilized into carefully timed messages and strategic indifference. A woman could dress like a cathedral at carnival, throw a verse across the dance floor like a gauntlet and leave the poor fellow to decide whether he had been serenaded, challenged or sentenced.
