Hard disagree. Ai is a force multiplier. Prompting is the interface. If you understand the underlying fundamentals and concepts, the acceleration potential is insane. So no, it’s not “just prompting”.

The higher ups at my org are all talking about how we need to "learn AI" like dawg it's literally just telling it what to do. No learning about it. Also we are evaluated on our Claude usage now lmao. It's so dumb.

I mean you’re definitely doing more than just prompting. I don’t think it’s harder than learning the fundamentals, AT ALL. The fundamentals of programming is way harder. That being said, you can learn about context windows, models not being deterministic and how to leverage multiple models, MCP servers, writing different docs to keep agents on guardrails, etc. It’s definitely more nuanced than “writing prose” but it’s also not as complicated as some would have you believe. Just another tool.

To me, AI engineering is not writing prompts. It is creating systems that leverage AI to speed up processes. Ie prompt scheduling, repeated inference and model building, RAG systems, etc. everyone wants to call themselves an AI engineer before they understand their limitations

I use AI as a learning tool. It taught me how to write a website with a form in Local Wordpress that I put onto cloudflare pages with working KV storage and email notifications once the form is complete. Got it done in 2 days. If I just did it the old way it would’ve taken me a month and look like Craigslist from 2007. Or I would have to pay a freelance dev 5-10k. That being said I think using AI in the workplace needs to be reigned in. Don’t use it to replace workers use it as a tool to learn.

I keep telling everyone that even if AI sticks around, "prompt engineering" is not going to be a thing long term. If you can explain things, that should be good enough. It's the tools' job to do better. There are *still* a bunch of people who believe they're better at promoting AI than others, and that it is some kind of skill that makes them special 🙄

IMO this AI epidemic has showed me that people have to strong opinions. You either here the AI cope or the AI hate, both of which use terrible persuasion and never make me believe what they are saying

Think about the engineers you know, think about the communication skills they have... getting them to write docs, ecrs, test plans or god forbid a design document can be like pulling teeth. They are brilliant but the skill set shift can be a struggle.

Using AI is very easy. The transition period is implementing it in your CI/CD pipeline, measuring KPIs about it, manage responsibilities and accountability and compliance stuff. Those people will always have a job. Aka the PO, project managers, infrastructure and BA folks. Coding is solved. If you dont believe it you are not using AI to its fullest potential. Even if you come up with the idea faster or as fast you will not type as fast as it can generate. Thank god I never had passion for it so I will not miss it. I will just transition elsewhere.

Okey my prompt engineering is now just. talk to it for 30 seconds of exposing me problem. what I want it to do and how much authority it has to do it. and it's smart enough to know how to do it and to just do it. models are made to make my life easy. I should need to give it a document to do work for me. it can go do that for itself 😭

We spent ~20 years teaching people to work with keywords via google. To the point when I worked in retail I would get people speaking to me as if I was google. No “hi hello how are you” when I greeted them as they entered the store. Just an immediate “CONTROLLERS! XBOX/PLAYSTATION CONTROLLERS”.
