@reignsupremex: Fannie Lou Hamer understood that political rights without food, land, and income left Black families vulnerable. In 1969, she used a $10,000 donation to purchase forty acres in Mississippi’s Delta and founded the Freedom Farm Cooperative near Ruleville. Freedom Farm joined land, shared labor, crops, and livestock. Soybeans and cotton covered taxes and administrative costs. Vegetables went to people who worked the cooperative. In 1970, the farm added 640 acres. With National Council of Negro Women support, it created a pig bank with thirty-five gilts and five boars to help poor families access food. The cooperative built more than a farm. It linked food, work, mutual aid, and local control. It also faced the hard limit that many community institutions face: it lacked the stable backing required to survive over time. Fannie Lou Hamer left us a serious question.
