@based_leonese: Spain became known as a Catholic empire because Catholicism was deeply intertwined with the formation of its kingdoms, political institutions, and imperial identity. After centuries of Christian kingdoms expanding during the Reconquista, the union of Castile and Aragon under Ferdinand II and Isabella I strengthened the idea of Spain as a unified Christian monarchy. The conquest of Granada in 1492, the final major Muslim kingdom in Iberia, reinforced this identity, while Spain later became one of the leading defenders of Catholicism during the Protestant Reformation. As the Spanish Empire expanded across the Americas, Asia, and Europe, the Spanish Crown supported the spread of Catholic Christianity through missionaries, churches, schools, and religious institutions. For centuries, the monarchy therefore presented itself not simply as a political power, but as a defender and global patron of the Catholic faith.
