As a crew chief and a military aircraft maintainer, these comments are disgustingly ignorant. Yes, a pilot is going to avoid birds, because you know what birds do? They damage flight critical systems like flight controls and engines. It’s an in-air mishap, an X and C condition in forms. X meaning unflyable until the aircraft is thoroughly inspected and the engine(s) are changed, and C for biological contamination of the airframe. There’s a movie that people who think bird strikes aren’t a big deal should watch. It’s called “Sully” and it’s a real story that happened to an airliner that hit a flock of birds and ended up crashing into the Hudson River in New York. This pilot was correct in attempting to dodge the birds and the video makes the plane look closer to the shore than it really was.
