Michael Hingson was a blind man who was working at the World Trade Center on the 78th floor during 9/11 when the building was struck from above them. His service dog Roselle remained composed after the impact and led him, and about six other people down 1,400 steps to safety in a subway station entrance where they were able to take cover just before the South Tower collapsed. She was the bestest girl. You can read about her in Hingson’s memoir “Thunder Dog”

The dogs became depressed because during the ground searches they kept finding bodies. So the firefighters went and hid under rubble so the dogs could find them to boost their spirits

The dogs did what they could. It’s not their fault. It is no one’s fault.

Americans!!! Please look up the nearest organizations that you can donate your bodies to when you pass, as they can use your body to help train rescue/cadaver pups! They became depressed because they were used to finding people alive during training, so allowing them to find the deceased during training is incredibly important. Help future pups by donating your bodies for them to find you ❤️

When I first heard about the vet teams that came in from all over the country so that the dogs would have 24/7 — literally 24/7 — care, I lost it.
The "Dogs of 9/11" part of the museum hit me so hard, tbh. They were right next to us and never left our sides.

This is worded kinda weird, for anyone confused, after 9/11 so many people died in the rubble that the rescue dogs because so sad and depressed that they couldn’t help, so they staged live people in the rubble and brought the dogs back to “save” them

A few of the dogs had to be retired after it, they couldn’t do it anymore. The dogs got PTSD from it too. And sadly some of them developed cancers too. They sacrificed to bring help and closure to so many. Beautiful animals with such soul 😭

My dad was on the USAR (United search and rescue team) and he would go into tunnels that were made in rubble to grab buckets full of debris. A cadaver dog would sniff the bucket for human remains.

Yeah, the dogs reportedly kept getting extremely excited upon finding someone, only to be disappointed when they realised they weren’t alive 🙁

My apartment was on Fulton St, behind my house at the hospital the ER staff stood at the bay waiting for first responders to bring the injured. No one came. No one came.

They had a whole section dedicated to the dogs of 9/11 at the museum when I visited years ago. I cried so many times.
