@alex_thevet: If your old cat is getting thinner, please don't put it down to age. It almost always means something specific. Cats hide illness better than almost any animal we treat, so by the time you can see the weight loss, or feel the spine and ribs more prominently, something's usually been going on a while. Five things a vet thinks about when a senior cat comes in lighter than last time: chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism (losing weight despite being ravenous), diabetes, painful dental disease, and less often, cancer like lymphoma. The reason to catch it early: four of the five are manageable, and several curable if caught soon enough. Weigh your cat every month or two, and get a senior blood panel once a year from about age 10. #vetexplains #seniorcat #catweightloss #cathealth

my cat only barely started getting kidney disease at 16 and she was already dont drinking for a while, we had to hold her down and give her IVs, traumatizing btw. then she had a stroke out of nowhere when she turned 17 (literally the week of) and stopped being able to walk straight. we had a vet appointment scheduled the day she had a seizure and died in my arms when i was trying to use a syringe to get some water in her mouth, sometimes they just start dying for literally no reason

I am tired of lazy cat owners. I have met SO many cat owners that do not even do yearly checkups. My local humane society does vaccines and yearly checkups for 80CAD. TAKE YOUR CAT TO THE VET![Twin hearts]

My baby stopped eating and drinking, and turns out she had gingivitis and two painful teeth. Got them extracted.

My girl turns 10 this year and me and her vet are going to do yearly bloods to keep an eye on everything. She's not a sick girl she's very healthy and I just want to keep her around for another 10 good years

Mine’s was due to chronic pancreatitis and ibd. But neither were new diagnoses, just hard to manage. He did live to be almost 16 but keeping weight on him was a constant struggle as he got older.

My 14-year-old has some muscle wastage across her back legs. She is of course less active than she used to be but I’m curious: is that the only cause or could there be something underlying?

my cat is 14 and very skinny. not like this tho. but he have had several blood tests done and they haven't found anything wrong with him. so I guess I just have to accept that he's getting older fast. he only eats senior and kitten food.

My 22yo was treated for hyperthyroidism at 18. He was always a lean but healthy cat and then started losing weight. He came good and until recently weighed more than he ever had. He's got dementia now and his kidneys are starting to fail, but he sees the vet once a month and we're managing it. Never would have had these last 4 years with a happy cat if I'd accepted weight loss as normal for an older cat.

My girl is 19 and has hyperthyroid, as well as renal failure from it not being caught/ me asking to take her in for 3 years before my partner finally noticed how much weight she was loosing. (Partner pays for her bills not me, I don’t make enough lol)

Yes, my 16 year-old cat is definitely losing weight although she eats twice a day but her fur is becoming quite matted particularly on her back

There’s a reason so many senior cat foods have higher calories. My girl needs to lose a little bit because of her arthritis so she’s definitely not eating one.

my old girl was quite skinny but she had issues with her teeth. once she had her teeth extracted she became a bottomless pit and now eats 3 times a day and is again round and fluffy

I believe the black cat that you show I think it was the third cat suffers from cerebellar hypoplasia. and nothing to do with the kidneys.?

My old 17 year old cat is very skinny , did full blood work nothing wrong with her. SHe has access to food 24/7. Frankly I do believe being skinny keeping her healthy.

Multiple water bowls in house! Put one in your bathrooms and watch how much more water they consume! (Helps protect kidneys from disease)
