If you read the Dominican Constitution you will understand that only if you have a parent that is Dominican you are Dominican, Haitian constitution is the same. When you go to another country and they ask were are you from you probably will I am an American, you are not going to say I am black or white bc they are not asking for your race, they are asking you nationality.

If you are Dominican ethnically then it is by blood the same way being a Black American is an ethnic group. The Eastern side of the island now (Dominican Republic) went through an ethnogenesis out of which spawned Dominicans if you're ancestors are tied to the land by blood then they are Dominican by blood and ethnically. Same applies to most countries around the world.

The difference between being American by “blood” and Dominican (or pretty much any other Latino) by blood is that the MAJORITY of Dominicans are mixed together due to hundreds of years of mixing on that island which created its own ethnicity, Dominican. Americans aren’t largely mixed together because whites didn’t want to mix together so there’s a separation.

We’re Dominican by blood according to our ancestors. And more recently it’s supported by DNA. Most Dominican have indigenous ancestors proving we there before colonization.

When we Dominicans say we are “Dominican by blood,” there is actually a historical and legal concept behind it: jus sanguinis, meaning “right of blood.” Dominican nationality is not based solely on the country where you are born; it can also be passed from a Dominican parent to their children. So, whether a Dominican is born in Santo Domingo, New York, Spain, or anywhere else in the world, that Dominican blood and connection to the nation can be passed down through their parents. That is why we say, “Soy dominicano de sangre”—because being Dominican can come from our ancestry, not simply from the place where we were born. 🇩🇴

Being Dominican goes far beyond a simple document or a nationality; it is a deep identity shaped by our biology, history, and mixed heritage. We all share those same genetic markers descending directly from the Taínos, the original inhabitants of our island, intertwined with African and European roots that firmly trace back to colonial times. Those three common denominators are what form our essence by blood and explain the immense pride we feel for our roots. Being Dominican is a living legacy and a way of life! 🇩🇴

(1) born from dominican parents and born on the Island (1), pure seed, or Puera Sepea. 2. born to at least one dominican parent but never came/went back to the country but are still tied back to the Dominican Nationality by blood, (the parent). also its a language nuance that has a deeper meaning in its native tongue and loses depth in translation.

In 195 countries in the world nationality is determined by blood refer to as “ Jus Sanguini “ ( DR ,Haiti and most of Latinoamerica are included ) In 33 other countries nationality is given when born in the soil “ Jus Soli “ ( The USA is included ) . In DR both or one of your parents have to be Dominican in order for you to be a Dominican national. Hope this helps ! We consider you an honorary Dominican 🥰🥰🥰

It depends some says it when they were born outside DR but are from Dominican parents. There is other saying “the Dominican are born wherever” also have to do how we grant our citizenship it’s by blood not by land. Also you should already figure it out we are proud nation.

So is it like if I said, I’m Spanish by blood because I am Mexican by ethnicity, American by nationality but my great great great grandparents are from Spain (because of colonization)? lol is is the same?

Think about being a foundational black American (descendant of slaves in the U.S.) vs being black (meaning African, Jamaican etc.). Regardless of colonization there is indeed a genetic and historic lineage there.

There is not other type of dominican. Dominicans are only those whose parents, and grand parents, and great great parents are dominicans. Otherwise they only have dominican-citizenship.
