For those having a hard time reading the caption: Similar to our teeth, Winny's mandibles were made out of calcium phosphate which made them extremely strong. The hardest parts of her body, like her mouth parts, tips of her feet, and claws were stronger than the rest of her shell. Calcium phosphate gives parts of their body extra enamel-like hardness. So you might wonder why their whole shell isn't made to be that strong. When it comes time to molt, they need to reabsorb calcium and other minerals from their shells. They secrete an acidic enzyme in the days leading up to their molt to break down the old shell for reabsorption. They store those minerals to regrow a new larger shell. The parts of their body made from calcium phosphate do not break down. That way they always have strong feet to walk on and strong claws for defense. Phosphorus is so important to their survival that they store it in their hepatopancreas (which is a digestive gland.) Nature is truly amazing!
