@sheriffinsight: Sabrina Hansen spent her career building the systems meant to keep people safe from fire. Her son grew up hearing the story of one that worked exactly as she designed it, saving everyone inside a building years before he understood the risks that came with his mother’s job. Hansen age 45, a fire protection engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Anchorage office, was one of eight people killed August 20th when a chartered twin-engine Cessna 441 Conquest crashed on steep, rising terrain near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site in southwest Alaska. “I’m currently overwhelmed. It’s just, it’s a lot. Overwhelmed, stress, you know,” Kaleb said. “It’s still hard to believe that mom is gone. I still reminisce a lot about her.” Asked how he’d describe his mother to people who never had the chance to meet her, Kaleb didn’t hesitate. “Amazing faith in God,” he said. “She had a fierce love for God. Anybody she met, she talks to them about it. She would talk to them about what they’re needing. She would give to them willingly — just willingly — without any strings attached. She did everything she could to help people, to tell them about God and whatnot, that she lived for God is what I would say.” That same instinct, Kaleb said, shaped her as a parent. “Very caring,” he said, searching for the words. “She taught ... I would say, prepared me for the real world. She prepared, not just comforting me in the difficult times, but also giving me advice, telling me what to do for certain difficult things and whatnot. She encouraged me and just showed me the direction to go in life, showed me a sort of a light in a way.” Among the lessons he said he carries with him: integrity, boundaries and the confidence to think for himself. “I would say I learned integrity from her, from her work,” Kaleb said. “I would say she also taught me a little bit about putting boundaries. Definitely one of the things she was adamant about teaching me is not being peer pressured and things like that and having my own, quote unquote, own saying [in] things, not [just] agreeing with what just was.” Outside of work, according to Kaleb, Hansen’s world centered on two things: hockey and cats. “She loved playing hockey. Her favorite position, and I think only position she’s ever played in hockey, is the goalie,” Kaleb said. “She’s always loved being at the net and defending against the puck.” It’s a description echoed by the community that watched her play. In a tribute posted online following her death, the Anchorage Women’s Hockey League remembered Hansen as a “passionate and incredibly talented goaltender who never gave up on a play,” recalling that she was “always willing to talk shop and share friendly feedback” with opposing goalies and had given away gear embroidered with her own name to newer players in the league. Kaleb said he saw that generosity from the stands for years. “I would always, a lot of the times, go to her games and watch her,” he said. “She was a pretty good goalie, I have to say. I enjoyed watching her play and some of the absolutely amazing saves that she made. I was just like, ‘wow, how did she do that?’” “One of her notable qualities also while playing hockey is she always tried to help the other team’s goalie out, whether that’s pointers or tips, anything,” he added. “She was always looking, even in her hobbies, to help people out.” At home, that meant a house that, for years, belonged to the cats as much as the family. “We have four cats currently,” Kaleb said. “A couple of them are rambunctious little heathens, and the other two are older cats who just look at the other two like, ‘you get away from me.’” #plane #rip #fyp #army #alaska
