This was NOT easy. In 2015, I moved to Texas knowing no one. No network. No referrals. No clients waiting for me. Just years of experience as a CPA… and a dream I had carried for a long time: I wanted to build something of my own. So I started small. I registered my business early 2016, opened a bank account, got professional insurance, and started answering tax questions inside Facebook groups. One question at a time. One client at a time. One relationship at a time. But I didn’t quit my job. For 7 years, I worked my full-time accounting job while building my firm at night and on weekends. There were seasons when I was exhausted. I could work 100hrs a week straight for a month during Busy Season. There where times when I wondered if the business would ever become big enough. And seasons when quitting my job sounded amazing…but financially, it wasn’t time yet. And I was scared of leaving a cushy 6-Figure salary with this economy. So I kept building. I became a QuickBooks ProAdvisor. I found bookkeeping clients. I built relationships with bankers, attorneys, financial advisors, and other professionals. Some clients worked out. Some were complete disasters. 😂 But every single year taught me something about the kind of firm I wanted to build. Then something happened. By 2023, I looked at the numbers and realized: My business was making approximately what I was earning from my full-time job… except I was spending 50–60 hours a week at my job and only about 10–15 hours a week building my business. That was my moment. I didn’t quit my job to start a business. I quit because I had already built one. And when I finally announced that I was going full-time, years of relationships started paying off. Referrals came. People reached out. Even clients I had previously worked with found me and asked if I could continue serving them. Some of those clients are STILL with me today. It’s 2026 now, and looking back, I’m grateful I didn’t rush the process. My story isn’t a “quit your job and make $10K next month” story. It’s a story about building quietly. Working when nobody was watching and most of the Time ALONE wondering if I was doing the correct things. Creating relationships before I needed them. And giving myself permission to take the leap when the numbers finally made sense. So if you’re an accountant or bookkeeper sitting at your 9–5 thinking… “I know I could build something of my own.” You probably can. And you don’t necessarily have to quit tomorrow to start. Start where you are. Build while you earn. And create your exit strategically. If you want me to share exactly how I would build a virtual bookkeeping & tax firm while working a full-time job in 2026, comment “FIRM” below. 👇 I might turn this into a series. ❤️ #AccountingBusiness #BookkeepingBusiness #CPA #AccountantTok #BookkeeperTok
