It’s 2026… and you still think this pool was just for swimming? 😳 Welcome to the indoor swimming pool at Biltmore Estate — built in the 1890s inside America's largest privately owned home. And while it looks like a pretty normal empty pool today, the way it worked back then was VERY different from what we know today. 👀 💧 There were no modern pool systems like the ones we use today. 🔥 According to someone who used to work at Biltmore, the water was heated using steam already being produced for heating around the estate. A large steam hose was placed in the water until it warmed up. 🪢 And those ropes you see? They were there for swimmers to hold onto. The craziest part? 🤯 There were no modern pool chemicals like chlorine being added to keep the water sanitized for long periods. So the water reportedly had to be drained and replaced regularly. Imagine having an indoor swimming pool inside your house… …but draining the entire thing every few days. 😳 Today, the pool is empty — but when Biltmore was built, this was considered incredibly advanced for its time. That's what I love about visiting historic places with kids.
