@stephenjamestownsend: General Townsend, Commanding General of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), paid a special visit to Fort Knox to check on Cadet Summer Training. He came specifically to observe Advanced Camp and Basic Camp the critical summer training that turns college ROTC cadets into future Army officers. The General didn’t just watch from the sidelines. He went hands-on. He toured some of CST’s top training sites, including the rappel tower, Group & Zero ranges, the CBRN chamber (where cadets practice with gas masks), and first aid lanes. More importantly, he took time to talk directly with the cadets. He asked hard questions. He challenged them. And he shared two big lessons he wants every future officer to take away: 1. The importance of teamwork especially for cadets coming from small ROTC programs who are now operating in squads and platoons for the first time. 2. The power of leading by example. General Townsend even jumped into the training himself. He ran the obstacle course alongside cadets and went up the rappel tower bringing back memories of his own ROTC summer camp at Fort Bragg in 1981. His takeaway? Today’s cadets are more capable and the training is more intense and realistic than what he experienced decades ago. This is what leadership looks like.
