The night we decorate the Christmas tree I give them a “beginning of the season” gift that contains pajamas, a mug and some sort of candy/snack. Then we decorate the tree and have a Christmas movie night.

My two favorites I’ve always done: 1) I also do a homemade advent calendar but it’s with activities only - ex: get milkshakes and drive around to look at lights, PJ dance party, ice cream and waffles for dinner, etc. 2) we have an indoor snowball fight with the biggest marshmallows we can find. Our elves bring the marshmallows for us.

My mom made Christmas so over the top when I was a child. And we were dirt poor! We got the free presents from community non profits but my mom used her hands and what little money we had to decorate our house and all the Christmas light drive bys. It has made that time of year that happiest for me just from the memories! I’m trying to do the same for my kids.

We started the Shepards’s dinner last year and LOVED it. We did it on Christmas Eve Eve. Lights off, candles, cooking middle eastern inspired food, and reading scripture!

Last year some of the things I did: Made an advent calendar with 25 Christmas activities and a bible story each day. Decorated our car the last day of school before Christmas break & drove around to deliver cookies to neighbors/friends that we baked together. Matching Jammies every year.

After Christmas dinner we do “reindeer games”. A friendly team competition where we do holiday themed games for points.

We also do Christmas Milk every night of Advent. Super simple! Recipe : Heat 4cups of milk( microwave or stovetop) add 1/3 cup sugar, teaspoon of vanilla extract or paste, and 1 cinnamon stick. Heat all together until sugar is melted. Do not boil.

Oh, I love the pajamas on the first day of December. I never thought about that so they get to enjoy it for the whole month leading up to Christmas not just on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and then they hardly wear them afterwards.

The Santa’s bag app is a good tool for organizing gifts. You can keep track of your budget, gifts to buy, what gifts you have ordered/wrapped etc.

Instead of the night before Christmas box, we do a box the night Christmas break starts. & we decorate the car to pick them up for Xmas break. In the box they get the normal pjs, Christmas book, and fun things like hot cocoa, s’mores stuff & any other cute little Xmas things we find. They’re in elementary and excited with the smallest things

We like to go to drive thru light shows and we have a historic train depot that sets up polar express train during that time which is so much fun, and our area is set up so that once the pumpkin season is over, they switch it to Christmas lights and activities on a little farm, it’s so enjoyable for all of us.

There was one year that our church didn’t do a late Christmas Eve service because it fell on a Sunday (still not sure why they didn’t….) but it was the most special Christmas Eve we have ever spent together. We turned out all the lights and my husband played his guitar and we sang Christmas carols. We even lit candles for Silent Night. My kids still talk about that Christmas Eve years later - and it was free! Pure memories made by spending time together

Christmas is also my Super Bowl. It’s when I shine. We kick off Christmas by seeing the play The Christmas Carol the day after Thanksgiving. We will see at least one other play, this year it’s The Grinch because it’s touring in our town. We will have dinner at a fancy restaurant and dessert will be Grinch donuts from Krispie Kreme. We go to Christmas lights at the zoo, drive around and see lights, make cookies, decorate gingerbread houses, have a Christmas moving night, I make everyone’s favorite Christmas cookies and our family’s traditional homemade candy. We read Jotham’s Journey for the advent and the kids have advent calendars. We go downtown to stroll the large beautiful nativity scene. Ice skating at an outside rink in a neighboring town that has a huge Charles Dickens Christmas display through the town. We have lots of treats, hot cocoa, and as many Christmas lights as I can possibly cram in. My shopping is almost done. Wrapping will be done before Thanksgiving, candy starts the week of Thanksgiving, I will start freezing cookie dough in late October. I want to enjoy the month of December to the fullest. I like to have all the work done by then. On Christmas we have a huge brunch with all the traditional food, and we always have Chinese food for dinner. I have always made Christmas magical. I’m so thankful all my adult kids want to be home and wake up with us on Christmas morning. We have added grandbabies now. It’s just keeps getting better and better. I spend the week after Christmas in my house enjoying the peace and the decor. I take everything down in New Year’s Day.

I started doing a whole “North Pole Breakfast” for kids back when we did Elf on the Shelf to welcome him back. I decorate really elaborately and make it a whole party. They’re in their late teens and twenties now and never want me to stop. It’s my FAVORITE. They get new pajamas too- sometime toward the beginning of season

We do 12 days of Christmas every year. It’s a mixture of gifts and activities, staring with a Home Alone movie party with cheese pizza and Pepsi. My kids recently were asked what is their favorite family tradition and they all said 12 days of Christmas (17 year old down to the 6 year old). My momma heart was so so happy because I am intentional about making traditions for my kids. New Year’s Eve we do minute to win it games to countdown to midnight
